A common residential kitchen may include a sink, dishwasher, and food-waste disposer connected within the same cabinet. That physical arrangement does not mean the complete group should automatically be counted as only 2 DFUs.

The dishwasher connection may require an approved air gap, high loop, indirect connection, or another method depending on the adopted code and local rules. The disposer must also be installed according to its listing and manufacturer instructions.

When estimating a complete system, identify each connected fixture or appliance and verify how the local code requires it to be counted. Avoid adding an unsupported disposer or dishwasher value merely because the appliance connects near the kitchen sink.

Kitchen Sink DFUs and Drain-Pipe Sizing
